Welcome to Glass Fusion Studios of Vermont

Sheets of stained glass

Welcome to my new website.  I wanted a website that allowed me to showcase my talents as a Stained Glass Artist.  It will contain photos of past commissioned stained glass work as well as stained glass windows that are for sale.  I also create utilitarian fused glass work that makes a great gift and is perfect for everyday use.

This website will also be a place where I’ll include photos of family and friends, some personal observations,  share inspiration for some of my work,  photos of nature and of course chat about stained glass, fused glass and my stained and fused glass studio, which is located in Bennington, Vermont.

I hope you enjoy it and if you have any questions or comments, send me an email…I’ll be happy to hear from you.

The photo above was taken of just a few of the more than 150 pieces of stained glass I have on hand and helps show the beauty of the colors and textures of glass.

Stained Glass Mosaic Catamount Update

Progress is being make on the stained glass mosaic catamount project:

(Catamount Prowl 2013)  The Bennington Chamber of Commerce Public Art Project for the town of Bennington, VT.  As of today I have approximately 1500 pieces of glass on the fiberglass “cat” and am about 15% completed.

The Catamount is being worked on in my studios, Glass Fusion Studios of Vermont, in Bennington, Vermont.  In addition to this public art project, we also design stained glass windows, build custom stained and leaded glass windows, perform repairs on stained glass windows and rebuild and restore stained glass windows.

It’s exciting to see our catamount project come along and can’t wait for it to be displayed at The Bank of Bennington on North Street come May 26th.  At that time it will be at that location until the gala in October, 2013 where all the Catamount’ (30+) will gather and be auctioned off to the highest bidder.  The proceeds (75%) go to The Bennington Chamber of Commerce, while the balance (25%) goes to the artists.  I’m estimating my Catamount will take about 10,000 pieces of stained glass to cover the entire surface.  Each piece must be cut, ground and glued in place.  Once it is covered, I will then grout the entire Catamount with black grout to help the patter and design pop.

Come back for more updates as I progress with work on the stained glass mosaic Catamount project.  In the mean time, here are a few photos of work in progress.

Glass Mosaic Catamount in Progress

Glass Fusion Studios of Vermont is hard at work preparing for this years public street art event in Bennington, Vermont.  The theme of my Catamount is “The Seasons of Vermont” and includes elements of the local area, as well as Vermont in general.  I’ve added a covered bridge, the Bennington Monument, apple orchard and skiers.

Well the glass mosaic Catamount for the Bennington Chamber of Commerce’ “Catamount Prowl 2013″ is underway.   I’ve been working on it for a week now and almost have the Spring leaves completed, along with some other elements.  I have to cut each piece of glass, grind it to remove any shape edges and point then glue and tape each piece to keep it in place until the glue takes hold.

After the Catamounts Prowl has completed its summer run, there will be a gala where each and every one of the Artists created Catamounts will be auctioned off to the highest bidder.  The artist received 25% of the proceeds and The Bennington Chamber of Commerce gets the remaining 75%.

If you are in the Bennington area and would like to see my progress on my Catamount, or see me working on it in person, call ahead and make sure I’m in the studio.  My phone is 802/379-5582, or contact me via email at joe@glassfusionstudios.com

Below is a photo of the “cat” in progress.

Tiffany Stained Glass Reproduction Lamp Shade

Hi,

I have recently completed making an 18″ Peony Stained Glass Lamp Shade.  The design is a Tiffany reproduction design as is the base of the lamp.  This stained glass lamp shade has 513 pieces, and the patter repeats three times around the shade.   The shape of the stained glass lamp shade is “turban” design and gives it nice shape.  I’ve attached a group of photos showing the steps of the stained glass lamp construction.  I made the lamp here in my Bennington Vermont Stained Glass Studio, located in Bennington Vermont.  Take a look at the process below and let me know if Glass Fusion Studios of Vermont can make a lamp shade, no matter the size, for you.

Fiberglass Lamp Mold

Pattern is repeated three times

All 513 pieces cut and ground to fit

Each piece has been wrapped in copper foil

Soldering the inside of the lamp once removed from the form

Complete with Tiffany reproduction lamp base

This photo essay helps to show the steps necessary to create a stained glass lamp shade. The stained glass lamp shade was made here at Glass Fusion Studios of Vermont, located in Bennington Vermont.

We specialize in custom stained glass window design, creation, repairs  and restoration work.  If you have any questions on this post or any stained glass questions in general, let me know by sending me an email to:  joe@glassfusionstudios.com

Catamount Prowl 2013

Several months ago I decided to participate in the Bennington Chamber of Commerce street art event happening this year in Bennington, Vermont.  In the past, the Chamber had local artists turn fiberglass moose into street art, and this year is not different, well, with one small change.  Instead of moose this years event will have artists working on fiberglass catamount, for the Catamount Prowl 2013.  My “cat” is being sponsored by The Bank of Bennington, and once done it will be placed in front of the banks main branch on North Street in Bennington from late May until the gala when they will be auctioned off in late October 2013.  Last week my catamount was delivered at 10 pm at night.  I will be creating a glass mosaic in conjunction with Anna Croyle of Patterns In Glass of Catonsville, MD.  Anna will be spending a couple of long weekends here in Vermont and we hope we can get a majority of the work done in those days together.  Our design will be the “Four Seasons of Vermont” and I will be recording our progress of this project.

Here is a photo of the Catamount in its delivered state.  It’s dimensions are approximately 6′ tall by 7′ long by 2.5′ wide.  The Catamount is life-size and is standing on a granite base.  We plan on covering it from head to toe in glass mosaic pieces and will include some fused glass pieces as well.

The cat is now in my studio awaiting its transformation.  We have some logistical issues to figure out, but those should be taken care of pretty quickly.

Check back every so often for updates and for other new work coming from The studios of Glass Fusion Studios of Vermont, here in Bennington Vermont.  Also, if you want more information on the whole Catamount Prowl 2013 event, contact the Bennington Area Chamber of Commerce.

“Grapes” Stained Glass Window

This custom stained glass window was donated to the local Rotary charity auction a few years ago.  The bidding was brisk and when it was over, the couple who had the winning bid told me they plan to install the window into a door leading to their wine cellar.  The window is a combination of the lead and copper foil method of construction.

As you can see most of the window was constructed using cathedral glass to allow for light flow, but it’s mottled to obscure what is behind the window.  The grapes themselves were individually cut, ground and wrapped in copper foil then soldered into the window.

This window was created in my Bennington, Vermont Stained Glass Studio.  Do you have an idea for a stained glass window you would like created?  Do you love stained glass but don’t know where to begin?  Let me help you through the entire stained glass creation process, from design to glass selection to building.  I’ll walk you through every step to make sure you are satisfied and get just the stained glass window you want.

Contact me today at joe@glassfusionstudios.com or 802/379-5582 and I’ll be happy to create a one of a kind, custom stained glass window just for you.

Blue Crab Stained Glass Window – Georgia

Hi,

I recently finished a stained glass blue crab window for a client in Georgia and I think it came out great.  I used the copper foil method of stained glass window building because of all the small pieces of glass that made up the crabs legs.  This is the third crab stained glass window I’ve created and they have all been different in design and size.  The latest was approximately 12″ tall x 32″ wide.  The client also needed a wood frame made so I had my woodworker in Baltimore, MD create it for me and the window fits perfectly.

The scene is of two blue crabs underwater on a sandy ocean floor with some rocks and air bubbles.  Each crab consists of about 45 pieces and each had to be cut, ground to fit like a jigsaw puzzle, wrapped in copper foil then soldered in place.

All work on this stained glass window took place in my Bennington, Vermont stained glass studio.

Take a look at our website, and let me know if anything catches your eye, or if you have a design or concepts, let us help you with design, color selection and building of your custom stained glass window.

We offer repair, restoration and historic restoration services as well so contact us and let us know what Glass Fusion Studios of Vermont can do for you.

I recently received a photo from my client showing the window installed in their Georgia beach house, it fits perfect!
